Robin Williams literature tribute

Skip Suicide, a TMNT fanfic by Author: Prophetella.deviantArt.com (and Please do.)

Turning towards Raphael’s choked sob, Michelangelo ducked the one-pound barbell as it flew into the wall beside him. Only Splinter’s quick hushing of his insulted cry, “Hey!” before it could provide adequate relief made him refocus on their father as the hothead darted out of the Lair in tears.

“What the shell, Sensei?” he said before the tears on the furry cheeks fully registered. Then Michelangelo ditched his new Silver Sentry comic to hurry to his father’s side and finally saw the news article interrupting the soaps in their last minutes before the sports game. The picture of the well-known comedian explained little until the breaking news bulletin reported the 911 call from the man’s bedroom. Michelangelo felt himself blanch, “He-he killed himself? Wha-Why? He was so funny!”

Splinter patted the sea green hand fixed to his armchair, ignoring the rare inflexibility of his youngest son. Sighing, he tried to explain what he could, “Robin Williams was a tortured soul, my son. His genius, and madness, much worsened long ago by the drugs he inflicted upon his already unsteady mind. Too often, such can weaken the strongest of resolve. He will be a great loss to those who search for hope and joy,” Splinter finally summed up as he watched his wilting son. Smiling at the soft horror of his sunshine child, the old rat unashamedly swiped a hand to collect the tears across his furry knuckles.

Donatello’s voice husked across the silent moment as he came to sit down with his saddened family members. His voice soothed, secure in its encyclopedic knowledge, as he said, “It’s called a dual diagnosis, Mikey. Mental health issues and drug addictions combine negatively to affect the stability and resilience of the victim. The depression or perhaps even manic features of an individual under duress result in drug seeking to self medicate and negatively reinforce the drug use, which only leads to more stress and imbalance for the sufferer. Many people have the misfortune of ending up in the gutter in order to reach bottom and seek help but, this is one of the most difficult forms of addiction and corresponding mental health issues to treat effectively. Mr. Williams’ case is all too common and often in his circles the behavior is enabled and coddled to the detriment of -- well, in this case I believe everyone is suffering, Mikey.” Donatello’s soft brown eyes filled with tears as he gave Michelangelo a small smile and offered his brother a gladly accepted hug.

Reaching a hand out to their father, Donatello squeezed the offered hand in return as he took in small dents both on wall and hand weight. “Raphael already knows, and is long gone, huh?” He sighed at the mumbled confirmation into his collarbone from his usually perky and positive brother. The olive turtle leaned his head against the orange mask as he continued to talk in a soothing tone above Michelangelo’s head. “I received the news notice on my computer and hurried out as soon as I saw it. This could ruin a lot of his favorite movies for a while and that may mean a long-term issue for the rest of us as well. There is already so little Raphael let’s make him happy! Still, we can give him a few hours before we let Leo in on the reason Raph is out this time. He’s meditating now and it’ll only worry him too early.” The genius focused in on damage control immediately as Splinter surfed channels looking in vain for distraction.

The next news alert mentioned two wives and several children and so Splinter bowed his head to say a small whisper of good wishes on them. Taking a soft breath, he turned the television off before he said, “Such a difficult time for that poor family and worse for them will be the fools unable to decide how to react simply by the cause of his passing. The poor man is gone and yet others will judge him solely by his final act and inflict their insecurities on his family. In the end, the world has lost a great light and we must all find our own ways of fighting back darkness to counter such a loss. Raphael is out fighting the darkness in others now and he will be back with his own resolution on these matters soon enough, I fear. Even more do I fear for anyone he catches attempting to follow Robin Williams’ route to the afterlife tonight. I hope he only finds those who truly deserve his fouled mood.” Splinter pecked a soft kiss on the brows of his available sons and turned to join the third in the Dojo to meditate.

Donatello gave a mirthless chuckle before he said, “This would be a night to skip suicide once Raphael nearly frightens them to death.” The clever prod brought Michelangelo up laughing and tugged a soft grin onto the furry muzzle that nodded in agreement. Donatello yanked the youngest off the couch, and by an arm slung over Michelangelo’s shell, they held each other upright as they moved back towards the Dojo for meditation. Donatello continued, “Suicide is never the way out but, Raphael could force anyone to fight for their life again.” The three mutants snickered agreement and moved out of the dark main room of their home into the candle-lit light of the Dojo, readily preparing for the coming battles.

I know the Afterlife welcomed you with stadium seating to see your first set.  I know you said first off that the denizens of the deep are welcome to watch as long as they keep the flaming out of the Angel wings. May the Daemons who haunted you be forever eradicated and as above soon, may it be so below.

posting this as this comment to me in another tribute piece meant a great deal

That's amazing, that you are helping others so generously with the information and research you have gathered. The sad truth is that, despite the fact that I believe all mental illnesses are "beatable" or can be helped/made "easier" to live with, they are very common and others (or the person themselves) may not always recognize the signs. Not only that but far too many people do not get help or know how to, maybe that is caused by a lack of information?

I commend you. I salute you!
