Paints in My Palette

Description

My precious art Palette. I paint in Acrylics so I will be peeling the dried paint off this and placing the special palette in my dishwasher (really! done it before!) so I kinda need to know what my colors are in it First! This is listed under the keywords paint, palette and art-supplies. I had no idea what category dA would have preferred this in so I would love suggestions if anyone has a better idea.
:thumb172788951: ASPIRING ARTISTS!

GET THEE OVER TO JERRY'S ARTARAMA & BUY A NEW MIJELLO PALETTE FOR $14.99 WITH THE NEW TRUCOLOR NEUTRAL GREY FEATURE! PRICE ONLY GOES DOWN FROM THERE! www.jerrysartarama.com

Now, understand that these colors are partially a direct result of supplies I have been able to work with in the past and what was recommended to me by my 70%-75% red-green color-blind Art Teacher. He suggested these for a serious artist to work with as a limited palette. His years of art and collaboration in art allow him to pick paint based on comparison in efforts. (Huggles to Mr. Fox!)

I will notate items he suggested with * and then add my personal reasons for some that I have added and could not resist returning to when having money to spend. I do have some in this loading only because I was using it up- like the greens. Feel free to question me on how I feel certain brands and paint colors work. Also, try looking in The Real ColorWheel which could really rearrange your thoughts on loading your palette, based on the science of pigmentation.

I'll start lower right corner and continue in clockwise direction- this makes it easy to say HEY, Look at the Single color with equal empty space on each side to it and move to the left to identify the colors I have stuffed in that thing!

1. Burnt Sienna (Since it can be an issue to mix brown with Phthalo or Cobalt blues to use)
2. Cadmium Yellow* (this was the teacher's rec)
3. Yellow Ochre* (ocher?)- great brown gold.
4. Lemon Yellow (This works better with the rest of the colors for skin tone painting)
5. Random $2 Forest Green Acrylic- (actually nice deep and reminiscent of 2003 Raph)
6. Phthalo Green- Love this color!
7. Sap Green by Lucas ACRYL Studio - BAD/WEAK! Bright shade not deep. (Might try Hooker's Green next time instead.)
8. Dioxazine Purple* Lovely Deepest Violet can be translated as Mauve as well.
9. Sap Green* by Liquitex a rare deepest green w/o muddy tones
10. Cobalt(?) Blue- Cool Blue, another R$2
10.5 Ultramarine Blue*- warm blue
11. Titanium White*- same in Gesso can be multi-tasked, Nice pure White.
12. Alizarin Crimson* amazing almost hot pink cooler red
12.5 Venetian(or Cadmium?) Red- Amazing blood color, warmer red (this is another R$2 item but a keeper)
13. Ivory Black* -IF one must have a black but mixing dark cools works as well.
14. Naples Yellow* wonderful with skintones
15. Cadmium Orange*

Always, Always add some extender directly to acrylics if you want more mixing time on the support or you are not using a wet palette.

In General it's better to get a DARK color of whatever color you are reaching for since you are better off adding white than trying to darken a color without muddying the effect you are looking for.
Black: Actually Mars black is an evil overpowering color- Ivory is a nice cool black that mixes decently. But Dioxazine Purple & Hooker's/Deep Sap Green work together well, too- they also make a good human black skin (my teacher says a bit of orange in it to lighten and brighten for the more colored hues).
White: Titanium is your best bet for pure white- get a Titanium White gesso and you can have one purchase serve double duty.

Primaries:
12's Quinacridone Magenta is the ACTUAL RED primary. But, try Alizarin once and see if you are not converted.
4. Lemon Yellow is the common name for a primary of many brands.
10's Ultramarine Blue really is a great mixer & as pretty as any Thalo(phthalo) might be, This color is easier to control.
Supposedly mixing equal amounts of the primary makes a brown but that can be tricky, too.
BROWN: Burnt Sienna + Ultramarine = Burnt Umber- save some money and mix your own.
Also, Cadmium Yellow and Ultramarine can make Burnt Umber

With Acrylics or Oils- a color you REALLY like Mix and then store in prescription Pill bottle with the plastic seal under the lid-- I was amazed to come back 3+ years later and find my paint was perfectly viscous STILL!

FUGITIVE colors (in any professional paint line) are colors that fade when exposed to sunlight or unable to remain permanently unchanged.
Watercolors:
New Gamboge for the Yellow, Q-Magenta, and Ultramarine are STUPENDOUS at mixing without turning into mud randomly.

Additionally, have a Paint thinner or drying delay medium/spray of some kind or expect to have issues on the flat mixing surface sector of your palette. Water only goes so far.

Another fun item that can be helpful in applying collage or assemblage items to supports is
GEL GLOSS MEDIUM- Matte medium would be good if you are avoiding a glassy finish. Great for adding depth to color. For collage apply some to your sector to cover, apply to back of paper and seal paper down with excess that gets squished out... expect to have to paint thickly if you want similarity to prior efforts on same support.

This stuff makes amazing suspended/layerable colors, dries to solid plastic and is the entire reason I decided to buy Translucent Gesso on sale as I would love to work with a more easy to mix in item. Since once Gel medium begins to dry there is no turning back and cannot do anything with old mixes (15-40 mins being the typical it takes to hit 'old').

A cheap and easy support is cardboard with two layers of gesso on one side and an X placed on the back to encourage the drying to not grow too curved. Get the corners! They are likely to dent.

((Should I just make this a text deviation and make my palette's picture a preview image? Note or comment to let me know!))

Thanks for this.

I'm starting out a painting in acrylics and I have the basic's set by Liquitex.
Six colors: Cad Yellow, Mars Black, Cad Red, Tit White, Ultra Blue, Phthalo Green, and Burnt Siena.
However I'm wanting to do a painting that may need more color (a sea turtle). If you have any other ideas I'd appreciate them! Thanks. :D
